Thanks to karl for some blog fodder during my dry spell! This time around it's the Album Cover Meme! Here's mine:

I've seen this meme before and had tried it, but couldn't in good conscience use an image that was all rights reserved... and this time around it was the same but I SO wanted to do this, so I fudged rule #3 and kept hitting refresh until the third photo on the page was something I could use. Pity, because the first image was SO appropriate... oh well!!

29 days to 2010: What's in my freezer?

Yes, I'm going to continue with the Food/Health topic a little while longer... today how's about a peek into my freezer?

Here's what's in the freezer door:



You may recognise a few Morningstar Farms products there: I have indicated I am trying to move Kosh and I away from dead animals, so I always have some sort of soy-substitute product at hand. Here you might see three packages of fake ground beef (one of which will probably be used in making meatloaf tonight!).

I'm not impressed with their fake breakfast sausage patties tho, and the fake italian sausage links are crumbly and meh: you might spot one open box each in there.

There's also half a box of Banquet's Heat n Serve turkey sausage links (majorly high in sodium tho, beware!), and maybe one more serving left of Tater Tots (will not be replacing this, since they aren't organic and therefore probably chockful of bad chemicals - bummer!).

And now for the main part of the freezer:
.. a little crammed, ainnit? LoL! Well, I admit I've been on a frozen vegetable spree lately, and I would say about 80% of the stuff in there is frozen vegetables.

You see, despite having the best of intentions of eating healthy, I found that whenever I opened the fridge looking for something for lunch or for a snack, the fresh veggies and bagged salads just didn't appeal to me... and if I spied Ben&Jerry's ice cream, heck any ice cream, or Kit Kats, well let's just say I'd scarf that "easy food" down, only to feel hungry again soon after, so back I went searching for something to munch, not finding the fridge contents appealing... etc etc etc.

So I decided to give myself other options: processing fresh broccoli is a pain, but if I were to have steamable frozen broccoli cuts that I just had to pop in the microwave for a few minutes? Then transfer the broccoli to a bowl and add a bit of fake butter, cheese and perhaps cinnamon or seasoned salt? Overall still a much better option than ice cream, candy or chips! And food would less likely to be wasted, thrown out because they went bad before anyone got to them.

Making radioactive mac&cheese out of the box? Add in a bag of peas! Okay so I usually add stuff like diced capsicum, onions, leftover chicken, or tuna anyways in an attempt to add some nutrition to the dish, but when you dump 4 servings of peas? That's a LOT of veggies to temper the mac&cheese with! It's an interesting combination I wouldn't serve to dinner guests, but if you want to try it at home, please tell me what you think, k?

There's also a box of individually wrapped chicken breasts; a large serving of chili from a few weeks ago; an opened box of No Name salmon; an opened package of Morningstar Farms fake chicken strips; a few steam-in-the-bag dinners-for-two (also high sodium, ugh!). The plastic bag contains two lamb shanks ("spares" - I already cooked 2 yesterday, look out for a writeup on that tomoro!).

Yes those are ice cube trays, LoL!

There are probably multiple bags of 4 or 5 types of bagged frozen veggies. It's not immediately obvious because everything's kinda stacked on top of one another, but take my word for it, there are A LOT of this in there:
Courtesy of Sam Walton, this is their Great Value Mixed Garden Medley: sugar snap peas, roasted red potatoes and red peppers seasoned with garlic herbs. Only 160 cals per bag. And it's delicious!! Seriously. After tasting one of these, on my next tip to Mal-Mart I went ahead and pulled like 8 into my cart!
Okay so the potatoes here aren't organic either, so I'll have to not overindulge. But still. So much better than one-third of a package of Golden Oreos, right?

... I know there had been a meme for fridge or larder contents going around the net a while back... maybe here we can start one for the freezer? Let's call it The Freezer Meme! Music Monday #22 (my #2): Meat Loaf

I've been knocked out by a nasty cold since last Wednesday, resulting in this blog being just a wee bit neglected. I did participate in the third World Blog Surf Day with my take on Holidays & Festivals over at a malaysian abroad, you are invited to drop by and surf around the world :) I've only made my way through half the entries myself, no worries!

Today marks my second entry in Music Monday (#22), and this time around it's my pleasure to introduce perhaps my favouritest singer EVAH, Meat Loaf!

Depending on your age and/or exposure, you may have first heard of him due to Paradise by the Dashboard Light (from Bat out of Hell), or from the mid-90s I would do Anything for Love (But I won't do That) (from Bat out of Hell II). Today's featured song is the title track of the 2003 album Couldn't Have Said it Better, a very special album to me in so many ways. Ironically, this album might have totally escaped my attention if I hadn't stumbled across this particular song/music video while accessing Malaysia Airlines' inflight entertainment channels on a flight to Switzerland.

I could barely recognise Meat Loaf: he had aged, lost weight too, but there was no mistaking that voice!!

Once I got back to KL, I went a-hunting for the album... finally found it, put it in my car's CD player, and o.m.g. I had goosebumps and shivers all throughout the first few songs, that's how much they resonated with me.

I hope it does something for you, too :)

Music Monday #20 (my #1)

I was prompted to participate in Music Monday today, thanks to a tweet by Miracle Laurie (you may know her as Mellie / November in Dollhouse) that pointed me in the direction of the song used as the theme for Dollhouse. ... it's kinda weird to be hearing words instead la-la-la-laaas (and they are eerie lyrics!)! Anyways, so here is Jonatha Brooke with What You Don't Know featuring the unofficial Dollhouse video. Enjoy!




I'm hoping Joss Whedon will at least be able to finish off Season 2 before FOX cancels the show (yes, it's just a matter of when, not if) ... to help, please watch Dollhouse on hulu or at Fox.com.

I have to point out that this list is pretty random - I doubt its origins "from the BBC", and the sloppy entries (Shakespeare and CS Lewis) turn this into a joke.

However, it's amusing for me to look at this list and have absolutely NO desire to even touch many of the works listed. You see, I have this aversion to "classic" "literature": it's a reflexive instinctual reaction developed from childhood, from school, where if you were "good in English" then it was assumed you liked/read classics by Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Shakespeare, etc. I very much preferred fantasy, regular fiction and Stephen King; had no patience for the stuffy classics; and knew I was judged lacking by certain peers and teachers. Me being me, I put on my stone face and thick skin and did my own thing.

Of the 20 I have read above, I think I would recommend The Time-Traveler's Wife: it is an excellent read, just make sure you have a box of tissues with you, especially when nearing the end of the book!

Of the remaining 80 above, Possession by A S Byatt has been on my to-read list for about a year. I first heard about her when taking my Fairy Tales class: she has a short story collection of modern / re-written / new fairy tales that were well-written. She comes across as a very articulate writer, and while I'm not a fan of love stories per se, I am very interested in the description of what this book is about. I also have the movie version somewhere on my Netflix queue - we'll see which I get to first! :)

better late than never - another round of the interview meme!

A few years ago, this interview meme went around the blogosphere, and I participated here and here. It's making its way around again: I did one round over at a malaysian abroad recently. I had also requested an interview from Kapgar back in December, and he sent me his questions, but somehow, I didn't notice the email until a few days ago. Sorry Kapgar!!

So here we are.. better late than never... yet another iteration of the Interview Meme!!

1. Malaysia and the United States of America get into a knock-down, drag-out, full-on street brawl to the death and you're a witness to it. A vendor comes by and offers you a giant foam finger to stick on the end of your hand to show your support during this time of turmoil. Do you pick the one that says "Malaysia" or the one that says "U.S.A."? Be honest.
Honestly? I'd be too grossed-out to even compute the offered finger.


2. What's the drunkest you've ever been and what did you do while trashed?
Oh my, where so I start??! LoL! So many tales from college life. But there's one more recent one: back when I met Kosh's parents for the first time, his father fixed me some deceptively strong Fuzzy Navels, so much so that I was half passed out in the bathroom fighting puke urges. And when my future FiL poked fun at me for not being able to hold my liquor, in my drunken haze, I. flipped. him. the bird.


3. What is the one thing you've seen your fellow bloggers do that you would never, ever consider doing yourself on your own blog?
Soliciting dares on how to mark my birthday, then actually DOING those dares! I'm in awe of Karl and his jumping out of a plane thing, but some of the other dares? No friggin way!


4. What is the strangest e-mail or comment you've received as a result of your blogging? How did you respond?
Good question. Nothing comes to mind, really. Does that mean I have a really large comfort zone and thick shielding?


5. List your top five sick-day, stay-at-home movies.
Firstly, I would probably curl up with a good book before I would watch a movie. I'm wired a little differently, LoL! But I suppose I would take a gander at the following movies:
- Rocky Horror Picture Show
- Shock Treatment
- Galaxy Quest
- Nightmare Before Christmas
- any of the LoTR movies - but only when I need to fall asleep, LMAO!

This one, this swan!

"Have you ever?" - as found at MsRay's Woman On A Journey blog.

1. Have you ever been on TV?

Ummm, no, I don't think so.


2. Have you ever sung in public?

Numerous times! It's all karaoke's fault! :) Totally out of practice now, though, don't think I could tarik those high notes anymore... no more Fantasia Bulan Madu for me! :(


3. Have you ever dyed your hair blond?

No. Light copper goes well with my complexion; but haven't dyed my hair since 2004.


4. Have you ever eaten frogs' legs?

Yup. Then I find out I'm not supposed to because it's haram. Yay!

"Hated" is such a strong word.... nothing comes to mind, but I'm sure I've received gifts that might have disappointed me before; however, I make it a point to appreciate the thought more than the gift itself.

Lampost, no. Bedpost, yes.


7. Have you ever cooked a meal by yourself for more than 15 people?

Oh gawd no!

Yup, back when I was young I fell and hit my head, got a cut above my eyebrow, it seems I bled all over the place!

Stumbled across a book-related meme a while ago, but kept not participating... until now... this week features a series of simple questions, rather than the usual deep-thought-provoking one :)

What was the last book you bought?
Would you believe this is a tough one to answer? Thanks to the Chicago Public Library system, I've borrowed most of the books I've read for the past two years. In fact, technically the most recent book I paid for was Fiction Writer's Brainstormer by James V. Smith, for 50 cents donation, from the library's discard pile!

Name a book you have read MORE than once
So many! I'm the type who likes to reread books. But first and foremost is still The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Has a book ever fundamentally changed the way you see life? If yes, what was it?
I didn't finish reading the book (but I did attend a management course that covered it), but Chapter One was more than enough to jolt me out of victimspeak. Stephen Covey's The & Habits of Highly Effective People.

How do you choose a book? eg. by cover design and summary, recommendations or reviews
A little bit of everything. I actually have a to-read list that's over 100 titles long that's been compiled mostly from reviews in newspapers or, more commonly, from online reviews I come across while blog surfing. *however* I usually don't have that list with me when I hit the library, so I end up hoping a book will jump out at me and say "read me! read me!!". In this case, the title needs to catch me first, then I read the cover blurb, and if it seems interesting, I'll take it. Have I mentioned how much I heart using a library?

Do you prefer Fiction or Non-Fiction?
Most definitely FICTION, specifically fantasy. I read to escape, so I don't want to be reading "real" stuff, LoL!

What’s more important in a novel - beautiful writing or a gripping plot?
This is a toughie. I appreciate any book of any genre that speaks in a different voice, brings forth a different perspective or just plain makes me think. I think style wins, but by a hair.

Most loved/memorable character (character/book)
This is another toughie. The tales stay with me more than specific characters. But I have to give a shout out to Roland Deschain, the last Gunslinger in Stephen King's Dark Tower series. "Good thing I **** left-handed" is seared into my mind, along with his reaction when getting his first taste of *sweet* soda. :) I don't think I'd like him in real life, but he makes for a great haunted protagonist.

Which book or books can be found on your nightstand at the moment?
The previously-mentioned Fiction Writer's Brainstormer by James V. Smith - haven't actually touched it in a while though... :p So much for ma NaNo preparation!!

What was the last book you’ve read, and when was it?
The Sword-Edged Blonde by Alex Bledsoe. And I finished it this morning about 3am - that's right, I *had* to get to the end of the tale. I really enjoyed it, and feel that if I were to get my own book out, it would read pretty much in the same style. It gives me hope :)

Have you ever given up on a book half way in?
Yes, a few times. Most memorable to me was Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee - I just couldn't deal with the atrocities meted out to the Native Americans... I wanted to know, but I couldn't handle it. I probably still can't stomach it today.

1. He's sitting in front of the TV: what is on the screen? Nowadays it's episodes of Dragon Ball Z - we're using Netflix to get a hold of them. If we're talking actual TV then it would be MAD TV (or Comedy Central channel in general) during the day, and Family Guy reruns at night.
   
2. You are out to eat: What kind of dressing does he put on his salad? Thousand Island on the side.
3. What is the one food he doesn't like? Gorgonzola cheese, LoL! found this out recently when we went to an italian place and I tried gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese sauce - he took one bite, and, never again!
4. You go out to the bar: what does he order? usually a tequila & tonic, and if he's in the mood for more then it'll be followed by a martini on the rocks

WHAT I'M READING

Currently reading Lord of the Silent Kingdom (Glen Cook): It's book two of what I assume is a trilogy. It's also as slow a read as book one. Thankfully the short choppy sentences from the first book seem to have been reduced. I'm still not totally hooked, but I really like the whole concept of the Night, and that alone already has me plodding through...

Next on the list (i.e. checked out from the library already, as incentive for once I finish the above book):

• Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife
• Lace Reader

The first two are as a result of watching a documentary on the Tibetan Book of the Dead recently. The last one was featured in an email from Borders recently, sounded good, so I put in a request for it, not expecting it to be available so soon.

The ABCs of Me Myself and I

Karl seems to be my source for memes nowadays :) Here's the second in as many weeks (with a third in the works!). It's not like I have nothing to post... I just end up using the path of least resistance :) bluetoothing images of the crazy cat hiding under a blanket or perched on the commode to the computer is such a bother *rolls eye* lmao :) :)

Here goes:

Accent: I don't know what "accent" you'd say I have. I speak differently than everyone else. In Malaysia I sound foreign. In the US I also sound foreign. So long I can be understood, I'll be happy with that. Because here in Chicago? I could barely communicate with a library staff that the copier room was locked: finally she understood it "Oh, the Kaaaaaa-pee-yer!" Then in Malaysia, I'm accused of being "too American", "please lose the slang/twang", "don't show off lah". Can't win.

Breakfast or No Breakfast: I can go without breakfast, no problem. But since I am trying to eat healthier, and that means 6 small balanced meals spread throughout the day, I've been making it a point to have *something* in the mornings. It could just be a glass of fiber with another glass of water as chaser. Or a zone bar, or two. Or my cottage cheese & cereal combo.

Chore I don’t care for: Cleaning in general. The apartment tends to get properly cleaned only when visitors are expected. Otherwise I'll swiffer it every once in a while and that's that :)

Dog or Cat: Used to have dogs growing up, and they are fun and all, desperate for your attention, pretty much delirious for any bit of attention you give them,,, but I prefer cats. I like their self-reliance. When a cat deigns to give you its attention, or *gasp!* wants to sit on your lap - it's a compliment that certainly makes me feel special :)

Essential Electronics: my 'puter. to a much lesser extent, my Sony Ericsson P800, and the tv. I'm no longer a slave to these things :)

Favorite Cologne: No longer too much into them, but my first love was Calvin Klein's Eternity For Men (yes, FOR MEN!! so sue me!!). Recently, I got a hold of the "summer" version of this scent - pretty nice, I spray that stuff on me once in a while.

Gold or Silver: Silver. Like Karl, I think (yellow) gold is tacky. White gold is fine. I think the "white" metals fit me better, anyway.

Handbag I carry most often: I don't use a handbag / purse. I do have a leather knapsack-style bag for essentials (which I need to whine about - maybe in one of my next few posts).

Insomnia: rarely.

Job Title: Jobless Bum and Wannabe Writer.

Kids: Not even a twinkle in Kosh's of my eyes yet (despite speculation to the contrary by certain parties, *ahem!*)

Living Arrangements: 1-br apartment in Chicago - for one more month, at least. Ah, uncertainty, so away!

Most Admirable Trait: Heh. The ability to see the trees *and* the forest? That was in my past life in the corporate world anyway, kinda out of practice now.

Naughtiest Childhood Behavior: Hmmm.... using a (white) candle (i.e. wax) to "write" on the walls, since I'd been forbidden to mark the walls with crayons/pens/pencils. I don't remember if I got found out. I only remember doing it once, dragging the candle at my waist level as I walked down the hallway.... I was maybe 7 years old?

Overnight hospital stays: Hospitalised almost a week due to Hepatitis A.

Phobias: Ummm, I have concerns, but nothing of "phobia" level, as far as I know...

Unusual Talent or Skill: I can list one eyebrow. The right one. Just that one eyebrow tho. I'd also like to think I am above average at Boggle (or Scramble as it's known in facebook)

Worst Habit: nail-biting. self-flagellation.

X-rays: I've had a few taken, yeah. mainly for proof of no TB: US visa requirements!

I have another book-related post... but since I've been rambling and blathering about books recently, I'll give that a skip and do this meme/survey I saw over at Eilen's instead. Yeah, so I need this to prompt content.. so sue me, LoL!

1. Cell phone: it was a permanent fixture for the longest time, I even had two lines at one point, but now? Now I check my phone once a week, usually find it dead and needing a recharge, and use it just for some text messaging.

2. Relationship: married.

3. My hair: unexciting past shoulder length dark brown wavy fine hair

4. Work: nope. I'm taking on the label of "wanna be writer" but haven't made much headway recently

5. My sibling: I have just the one, who much to my amusement jumped on the family fast-track! Married last July, and expecting their first kid next month.

6. My favourite thing: reading, and exploring new (fantasy) worlds through it.

7. My dream last night: don't remember. But this morning I woke up to find Kosh getting out of bed, and I was like "What's wrong? What's up?" and he looks at me weirdly - "Ummm, I need to get up to get ready and go to work?" "Really?" "Yeah, I've been hitting the snooze button for the past 24 minutes." "*Really*??" Yeah, that was weird considering I'm the one who usualy wakes up to his alarms.

8. Favourite drink: Coca Cola Zero

9. Dream car: don't have one. This aspect of materialism so does NOT appeal to me. So long the car is safe, reliable, and... would be nice if I didn't have to slide the seat ALL the way forward in order to get to the pedals, that would be nice, LoL!

10. The room I’m in: i suppose this would be the dining alcove, an area connecting the kitchen to the living room, where my computer is located.

12. My fears: I might have some flashes of fear/anxiety once in a while, but in general, fear has no place in my life :-) Try it, it's very liberating :-)

13. What do I want to be in 10 years: An established writer of strong fantasy tales with motivational & spiritual underpinnings that blend into an outstanding and unique voice.

14. Who did I hang out with this weekend: Just Kosh, as usual. We are both not that socially adept.

15. What I am not good at: Keeping to a routine/schedule even tho I know it's good for me.
