Hey EC, read my lips: "No 15% ads"!!

Calling all of ya'll who are dropping by via Entrecard... did you read and understand the latest announcement? I read it, but to tell you the truth I didn't "get" it until I saw something about it on Jackie's blog recently.

The announcement went something like this: effective 28th September 2009, 15% of EC's entire ad network inventory will be set aside for sponsors.

Translation: Come Monday, 15% of my site's page loads will show a paid ad on the EC widget, and not a legit/regular ad by fellow EC bloggers ... ads that I have no control over ...
  • they say they will "screen all sponsor ads to ensure that they meet our guidelines. All sponsor ads WILL be family oriented, and will not promote nudity, violence or anything illegal." Hey remember when everyone who agreed to run paid ads had that gross "yellow teeth" ad on their widget? It made EC dropping a horrible chore. Seriously, those teeth were g.r.o.s.s!!
  • they also say there is a feature coming soon that would enable users to disable/reject ads "that conflict with your blog" ... riiiiiiight, how to go about proving that any ad would conflict with a mixed-bag blog like this one? How about if they conflict with the blogGER, with his/her opinions and beliefs?? I have a feeling many if not all of my rejections will get overturned... or they'll add a limit to the number of ads you can reject in a month... or something....

so you know what? I'm done.

After over a year with EC, it's finally time to part ways for reals.

The widget will be removed once the current ads in my queue run their course.
(should bring me to Sunday, if my math is right)

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

  1. So your URL won't change, right? I just stay subscribed as is and all will be fine for me, right?

I like your Adams reference, by the way.

  2. kapgar: all that changes is I'll be deleting a widget from my sidebar this weekend. You're totally fine :) [and that Hitchhiker quote is the first thing that pops into my head whenever I'm in a "leaving" situation! The humor may not be up my alley but the whales' quote stuck to me ever since I first read it in 1990/1]

  3. wow. I hadn't taken the time to read about this. I think it sucks in the worst way. Being able to help fellow e-carders through their ads was one of the great features that made me want to give them a try. I don't like this idea at all.

  4. Stopped by via Along for the Ride. I couldn't agree with you more. I have been with Entrecard since July of last year, and this is finally the last straw. I have an Etsy shop series set to begin in October, but after that is done, I begin to pull the plug. I hope to see you around:)

  5. This may be the end of EC, I'm seeing many blogs that will be dropping out. I'm sticking in for a while, I'll see how it goes. I don't know why they can't come up with a better plan.

  6. I had been expecting this for a while. They were in it for the advertising money in the first place. I might stick around for a while to see how it goes.

  8. I'm reluctantly staying with EC. They've already backed off a little and it will be interesting to see how else things change over the coming days.

I've written my blog post EntreCard Updates where I explore what is going on and contrast EntreCard to Adgitize and CMF Ads.

In addition, I've set up a survey where I ask about people's preferences with blog advertising networks. I would love it if you and your readers could come by and fill out the survey.

I'll write more about the results as I gather more data.

  9. Hi,

At the end od the week, I'm pulling the widget. I already pulled my drop page and super cool robot that updates all my droppers.

I'm going to rewrite them for "Along for the Ride!"

  10. Hola Lynne,

At last you've made the right decision. Smart move.

I was among the early birds to jump in the wagon when they were starting out. It was great back then especially when there's nothing to gain except ec credits!. I came to know many awesome Bloggers and their blogs.

With the supports from us mere mortals, they became very BIG indeed. Well, the rest as they say is hisstory...

See you around, my friend. Greetings and lots of love from Malaysia.

p/s Yeah, I'm guilty as charged. No new post since March - guess I was in self-imposed exile. (Alhamdulillah) my Father is fine. In fact he has gone to Yogyakarta with my Mom and Sisters. Hope to tell about that trip in my new post soon.

    Sincerely yours,
    ~ ArahMan7
