I've got cold feet!

I pity Kosh, he's got to put up with my totally frozen feet & toes whenever we hit the hay. No matter if it's summer or winter, but especially in wintertime, my feet turn into icicles! To say that I suffer from cold feet is putting it mildly.

And now with the low low low temperatures out there, my already cold feet get even worse when I brave the outdoors: the poor toes are frozen almost instantaneously, then take forever to thaw out.

So today I've been doing some research on how to prevent cold feet: the answer seems to lie in both warm socks and better boots... I found Big Sky Fishing to have great pointers and tips for me :)

Turns out I shouldn't use cotton socks during wintertime: cotton socks have little insulation; they also absorb moisture, but wet cotton socks then lose any bit of insulation they might have. A-ha!! I'll look for proper winter socks then, that might help! I'm cringing at the price tho, a 3-pack of medium weight socks is going for about $60! But my frozen toes are crying out for relief!! I wonder if these socks would also make a difference indoors...?

My current boots are officially winter boots, so perhaps the use of correct socks will help keep my poor toes warm when I go out? For some reason I'm not convinced that'll do the trick. Then again, I've also been salivating over these boots (the black version, of course) ever since I came across them a few hours ago... they are snow boots, which, according to this definition from Big Sky Fishing, means that they provide better cold and moisture protection. And yes, I prefer zips to laces, can you tell? :) btw, Kosh is way overdue for new winter boots, perhaps he'll be amenable to getting himself a similar pair for himself?

If you have a particularly warm and/or effective pair of winter boots or socks, do tell me about them in the comments, I'd love to hear from you!

  1. I bought a set of great walking socks on discount and they are really warm. I wear them all the time. I have a pair of Hi-Tec waterproof hiking boots. They are perfect for winter but I have my eyes on a pair of Timberland boots - waterproof of course.

  2. We wear our ski socks at home, but I think they are cotton. Either way, they are REALLY thick.

  3. I wear a pair of wicking socks under wool socks and my feet stay warm.

  4. I've noticed that wicking socks work, much like Carol pointed out. Good stuff.

  5. Thanks y'all.

The $20/pair SmartWool socks I looked at have wicking properties too, and got me a pair or three to try out. I am loath to use them too much tho because they are really cute, and also expensive. (shakes head at herself).

I'll look out for thinner specific wicking ones to wear underneath regular socks as well.

I have this aversion to thick socks, probably because for the longest time my winter socks were these practical yet ugly things my grandma made. :p
