heartsick

No matter where my life journey takes me, where I'm from will always be Malaysia.

... although I told myself I just didn't want to know anymore about what was going on, politics-wise, recent events were ridiculous enough to make themselves known to me. Then in the past few weeks, the sh*t really seemed to hit the fan. Inflammatory racist remarks and actions. The dude refused to apologise; surprisingly he was "punished" - suspended from UMNO for 3 years & stripped of all posts. Good, right? Ummmm, yeaahh... except that the reporter who reported it has just been arrested under the catch-all Internal Security Act. Three newspapers issued show cause letters for reporting the incident (but not Utusan Malaysia? Not NST? I bet they reported it too?). Then a 3-term Member of Parliament and State Exco *and* Raja Petra (RPK) are also arrested under the ISA - why? I can guess, but you know what? The government doesn't have to say anything, it *is* the ISA!

... enough already ... I am heartsick.

  1. Hi Lynne,

You should feel the atmosphere here right now. It is eerie-ly quiet. It is a feeling one gets in expectancy of an unknown - that kind of silence all around.

The guy who made those inflammatory racist remarks in public has been sacked from his Party and political office for a period of 3 years.

The public sees in that punishment another soft double standard mindset of the largely Malay powerbased Government. Had it been a non Malay who committed a similar offence, he would have been arrested by the Police, held in detention under the Internal Security Act, sent to a "Guantanamo" island prison camp where all these political offenders are held for an indefinite period without recourse to legal representation.

As for the beloved Raja Petra of Malaysia Today, there is little worry that the Malaysian Government will do anything "bad" simply because he comes from an influential Royal family from the Sates of Negri Sembilan and Selangor. Yet foul play cannot be ignored should any harm befall RPK.

  3. In a multi-racial society like Malaysia and Singapore, any racist comments or acts are serious matter that can put the whole nation into unrest. I couldn't imagine what will happen. The economy will certainly be affected, but my concern is with the people of the nation. People should see themselves as Malaysian or Singaporean in such multi-racial nations and not look at themselves as Chinese, Malay, or Indian etc.

  4. I don't know the situation but any racist comment makes me sick. I am fortunate to have been raised in an environment that promoted no racism or inequality. I was usually the minor race wherever we lived and never even noticed. I think people who make these remarks are beyond sick and ignorant. Sorry.

  6. I've just come back to the UK, having lived in MY for 8 months. There seemed to be a lot of tension just under the surface there, even if I didn't understand all of it.

I love Malaysia - I hope it doesn't tear itself apart by these teething troubles (it's still a relatively young country in some respects).

  7. It's exhausting reading the papers these days... So I have taken a break.

I wonder what's going to make the people in power work for the better of the country and not just pick on each other. So geram!
