Rubbish producers? Malaysians? where gotttt....

It seems that the average Malaysian produces an average of 1.5kg of rubbish every day, half of which can be recycled. Malaysians are urged to take the initiative to recycle their rubbish. And to change their tidak apa attitude of throwing all their rubbish into the garbage bin without separating and recycling the waste. (see here for online article)

... wow, since I barely produce even 500g of rubbish a day, who’s the person taking up my slack and producing 2.5kg of rubbish, huh?

But, you want people to recycle?

Y’know, apart from old newspapers, which have been recycled since forever thanks to people who go about buying your old newspapers, recycling here is just not convenient.

For the longest time, I had three large garbage bags full of aluminium cans in the boot of my car. I remember thinking I’d make the day of the rubbish bins foragers over by Lot10 if I’d ever be able to signal to one, pop open the boot, and hand him/her the bags – that might have been week’s worth of foraging right there! But I never did…. I suppose in the end I dumped them at the 1Utama recycle bins, I can’t say for sure.

And I couldn’t get my parents to do much recycling – hey my mom is Swiss and all, so she doesn’t believe in wasting, but it’s not like she was gonna have a growing pile of bottles and cans in one corner of the storage area to be gotten rid of if ever they made a trip to 1Utama? (Well, *i* would head out just to dump the stuff, but then, I suppose it’s more important to me than to them…)

And I keep saying 1Utama cos for the longest time that was the only place I knew of that not only *had* the bins, but also seemed to empty them, i.e. they were really processing the stuff somehow. I hope lah. :p

It would be so different if a recycling service was provided by the Municipal Council to all the homes - or at least to apartment complexes with a higher population (read:higher rubbish production) density.

But that would be a waste of money right? *sigh*

Let me share with you my first attempt at recyling, when I got back from the u.s., and had been stationed in the east coast boonies: I’d seen in the “town center” (harhar) that there were actually recycle bins, separate ones for aluminium, paper & plastic. I thought wow, that’s great! So I saved up my plastic bottles (at that time I was drinking lots of distilled water, as advised by the Fit For Life people, so I easily accumulated lots of empty bottles). One fine day, I drove up to the bin with an armful of empty plastic bottles, and proceeded to dump them thru the flap into the bin.

Only to hear some sort of protesting noise on the inside.

I peeked in … at a mommy cat with a bunch of pretty newborn kittens at her teats, looking up at me, disbelievingly. She’d probably figured out NOONE uses the bins so it was an ideal place to have her kittens, then next thing she knows these bottles are falling down on her.

Seeing that the existence of the bins only indicated yet another case of hangat-hangat tahi ayam, yet another abandoned initiative – probably due to lack of support anyway - I did the only thing I could do: cut down my consumption of bottled water, and gave up on the recycling while there on the east coast. This was 1995 – 1997.

Yes, things are a bit better now. At least in the KL/PJ area I see more recycle bins around in public places. Where they are properly utilized is another matter lah.

I think the WANT to recycle must be there.

What we need is education. And I mean real education – obviously running just a poster campaign coupled with an irritating song (“Recycle! That’s what we do!”) is NOT going to work. The rakyat must actually feel recycling is important enough that they would willingly inconvenience themselves once in a while in order to contribute to the greater good.

Of course, this would involve a change in attitude towards other things too. Like littering. Polluting. Having a respect for nature. For other races, other people, other abilities, other opinions.

Too much work?

Okaylah, stick to exhortations in the press calling for changes in attitude lah.

Same old same old.

I am mental

... MENTALly exhausted, that is ...

... but i have pretty much completed the drafts for my Lost Blogs thingy that starts next monday...

... of course, everything i've prepared may well go out the window once I see what & how others are tackling the same assignment :D

... but hey, it's as done as can be at the moment.
... the next step is adding in the other stuff, like the promotional links and stuff.
... and figuring out how i'm gonna tweak the format / template of this blog for next week.

Three LOL-worthy comics!

Yeah yeah, I’m still blogging strong :p blame this on The Star actually having some good comics today…

ONE: In today’s In-Tech section, pg IT18. The top Dilbert comic strip.
Pointy-haired boss is reading out loud the company policy that space heaters are not allowed in cubicles. The pyramid-hair lady (don’t remember her name) replies that her heater doesn’t heat space; it heats the air in her cubicle, so it was okay to be used. Then pointy-haired boss wonders aloud why anyone would heat “space”… and she replies… “it keeps Uranus warm”.
OMG I was *so* laughing at that…..

TWO: In today’s Section Two, pg T21. The B.C. cartoon.
The two “cavemen” are discussing women, and one of them asks “Would you say comparing the cute chick and the fat broad is like comparing apples and oranges?” The response – “Not really…. Apples and watermelons maybe…”
Haahahahahaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

THREE: In today’s Section Two, pg T22. The “Close To Home” single-box cartoon.
It depicts an insurance manager “regretfully having to decline” this guy’s application for life insurance. Who’s the guy? Hint: all you see of his face is the eyes, cos the face is hidden by the shadow cast by the hood he wears all the time. Got it? Yea, KENNY from South Park!
Totally utterly hilarious!!

All those three caused me to LOL today when going thru the newpapers. Of course, there’s plenty more in the papers, but … my reaction to the *actual* news? Bleah. Depressing. Frustrating. Irritating. I just stick to reading the headlines nowadays.

Now, what else can I do for procrastination? Hmmmmm it’s almost 1145am … maybe I go look for some early lunch?

Consistent?

In April 2004, I took "The Religion Test" on Tickle.com, and got the result of:

Unitarian Unversalist
(You are attracted to a religion that tolerates mixed beliefs about the existence of God and upholds the idea that there is something to be learned from every religion. You are open to a wide variety of religious and spiritual ideas. You are attracted to spiritual groups that are composed of typically open-minded and intellectual people who actively engage in individual exploration of many different spiritual truths.)

Then today, just about 2 years later, I took another test at beliefnet.com, since Dawn had pointed me in that direction. Guess what I got?
1. Unitarian Universalism (100%)

Heehehe :D When I read a bit more about this group, it really sounds like an "everything oso can!" type belief system. Haha, no worries, I am very well aware that if you are "too" open minded you brain might fall out :D Reason & moderation is (are?) key(s?) :-)

"Look at me; look at me"

heehehe that quote has stayed with me since we watched was it Get Shorty? That Travolta / De Vito movie :p The movie itself dragged a lot, but that line, omg, hilarious!

Here's something in a similar "Look at me" vein, and yet not... Found & snitched from moxie, with her blessing :-)

When an old lady died in the geriatric ward of a small hospital near Dundee, Scotland, it was believed that she had left nothing of any value. Later, when nurses were going through her possessions, they found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff, that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital. Once nurse took her copy to Ireland.

The old lady's sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas edition of the News Magazine of the North Ireland Association for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on her simple, but eloquent, poem. And this little old Scottish lady, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this 'anonymous' poem winging across the Internet:

Crabby Old Woman

What do you see, nurses?
What do you see?
What are you thinking
When you're looking at me?

A crabby old woman,
Not very wise,
Uncertain of habit,
With faraway eyes?

Who dribbles her food
And makes no reply
When you say in a loud voice,
"I do wish you'd try!"

Who seems not to notice
The things that you do,
And forever is losing
stocking or shoe?

Who, resisting or not,
Lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding,
The long day to fill?

Is that what you're thinking?
Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse,
You're not looking at me.

I'll tell you who I am
As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding,
As I eat at your will.

I'm a small child of ten
With a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters,
Who love one another.

A young girl of sixteen
With wings on her feet
Dreaming that soon now
A lover she'll meet.

A bride soon at twenty,
My heart gives a leap,
Remembering the vows
That I promised to keep

At twenty-five now,
I have young of my own,
Who need me to guide
And a secure happy home.

A woman of thirty,
My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other
With ties that should last.

At forty, my young sons
Have grown and are gone,
But my man's beside me
To see I don't mourn.

At fifty once more,
Babies play round my knee,
Again we know children,
My loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me,
My husband is dead,
I look at the future,
I shudder with dread.

For my young are all rearing
Young of their own,
And I think of the years
And the love that I've known.

I'm now an old woman
And nature is cruel;
'Tis jest to make old age
Look like a fool.

The body, it crumbles,
Grace and vigour depart,
There is now a stone
Where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass
A young girl still dwells,
And now and again,
My battered heart swells.

I remember the joys,
I remember the pain,
And I'm loving and living
Life over again.

I think of the years
All too few, gone too fast,
And accept the stark fact
That nothing can last.

So open your eyes, people,
Open and see,
Not a crabby old woman;
Look closer . . . see ME!!

Very touching, ainnit?
Feel free to share.

a self-tag :D

Snitched this from Dawn :D

How did you get the idea for your profile name? The "azlynne1972" part was so that my ex-colleagues had a better chance of remembering the address, cos I allocated the corresponding Yahoo!Mail ID for them too. The "Jobless Bum & lovin' it" was of course part of that whole "I've quit! Good riddance to bad rubbish!" feeling of relief.

What song are you playing now, or wish you were playing?... can't seem to play my CD on the puter right now, grrr! Otherwise I'd be listening to The Rasmus' Dead Letters album. My fave songs are #4 & 5.

Has the death of a celebrity ever made you cry? Gotta agree with Dawn on this one - definitely Diana.

What colour underwear are you wearing? not gonna peek, but probably black :D

Do you want a baby? sure. one thing at a time tho. paperwork. marriage. then a year or so later can start trying, maybe? :D

What does your dad do for a living? retired from job in the energy sector many years ago. now earns his living on the golf course, har har har.

What does your mum do for a living? not working no more. keeps busy attending all sorts of cultural activities.

What is/are your pet's name(s)? via Kosh, there's Cammy the crazy kitty.

What colour are your bed sheets? bottom = striped black/white. cover sheet = some faded green thing. Yea, I don't bother to match 'em. I'd be better about it if I were on my own.

What are the last 3 digits of your phone number? On the landline, 737

What was the last concert you went to? MEAT LOAF! Last September.

Who was with you? Kosh *smile* good memories, beb!

What was the last film you watched? V for Vendetta - excellent movie! So excellent I just can't bring myself to type up a review. Just go see it. It's a wake-up call. Go see. Go. Go!!

Who do you dislike most at this moment? Ugh, noone I can think of.. I rarely "hate/dislike" people - I just turn indiffrent to them if they piss me off :D

What food do you crave right now? BBQ BEEF RIBS! Kosh had them last Friday, I'm so jealous!! And I haven't had anything "real" to eat all day, so I'm starving right now.. gonna go find some food right after posting this up!

Did you dream last night? Yea. I must be concerned about Rail's & my plan for next Wed/Thurs cos i essentially did a dry run in my dream - getting guest bed ready, making sure alarm was set for early next day wake-up and trip to Putrajaya... when I woke up I was a bit disoriented wondering if it was already next week, LOL!

What was the last TV show you watched? Can you believe I havent watched tv since I got back to Malaysia? It's just not something I do here. So I suppose the last I watched was that crazy Da Vinci's Inquest marathon - watching the 2weeks' worth of episodes in one night when I was leaving for the airport the next morning. Yes, I'd packed my pags by then lah :p

What is your fav piece of jewellery? My engagement ring, plus my wavy bracelet, both from Kosh :-)

What is to the left of you?My empty water bottle.

What was the last thing you ate?Two kaya buns. Very insubstantial, and pure carbs. Did I mention I'm starving? :p

Who is your best friend of the opposite sex? Definitely Kosh :-)

Who last MSN'd you? I'll change that to Yahoo!Messenger, and that would also be Kosh - we had our "chat date" my Saturday night, his Saturday morning.

Where is your significant other right now? Well it's just after 6am his time as I type this, so he's either in bed or just getting up to head to the hospital. Halfway across the world from me. *sniff!*

Do you have a crush? Not for a long long time... but i used to have these crushes so often on such a wide variety of people! Jon from CHIPS. Starbuck @ Battlestar Galactica. Morten Harket @ A-Ha. David Copperfield. His bodyguard Kyle. The Italian guy in my class when I was attending school in Switzerland one winter. The guy from St Johns who coached me on how to handle the mace thingy (I was Band Major in Form 5 mah!). The guy who attended my Bahasa Malaysia tution classes for a while because he was resitting his SPM BM paper. You get the idea?

What is his/her name? The last "crush" I can remember is of Amir Yusoff: yea, the half-Swiss Malaysian singer. He joined us for some pool in Hartamas once (he was a friend of a friend's friend's sister). He used "perfection" (sampoerna hijau, mMMMmmMMMMmMMMmmMMMM!). My partner at that time got so damn jealous, not believing that I wasn't going to act on my "crush", padahal it's just a crush lah, rileks beb... But yea, my having that crush wasn't a good sign anyway... A symptom of other things, a sign of the beginning of the end... also good riddance :D

When was the last time you had your hair cut? Hair on HEAD, right? *innocent grin!* Last November, I think. I suppose I could do with a trim soon. I am keeping it long on purpose tho, Kosh likes it teeheee *grin!*

Do you have a mental disease? Nope. Not as far as I know lah. *grin!*

What shirt are you wearing? Grey teeshirt with a small "ILLINOIS" in blue & orange over my left boob.

Are you sexy? Not in my opinion. Kosh thinks otherwise. Aren't I lucky? :)

What's your favourite store? I suppose I could answer Marks & Spencer's (St Michael's). Dunno why, I like to browse thru their selection at the KLCC store... of course their products here are overpriced lah.

Are you thirsty? No, but I drink anyway (if you actually *feel* thirsday that means you are actually already dehydrated - so I've read lah)

Can you imagine yourself ever getting married? Yea. Just not gonna "mark" it in any big way, or as expected by busy-body relatives :D

Who's someone you haven't seen in a while and miss? Kosh lah! This is gonna be the longest we've been apart since Oct 2004 :(

Where do you work? I don't. I'm a jobless bum & lovin' it, remember?

Anyone like this meme, go ahead and tag yourselves, k?

More Blog Stats

This time on my blog posts, as opposed to traffic.

Triggered by Kosh's half-complaint half-plea "You're blogging too much too often I can't keep up!"

Yea, i *think* you may be right...
Average posts per month have gone up from 2.5 @ my first blogsite [#1] to 38.7 (this current one [#2] plus my occasional contributions to BSB [#3]).

Another way to look at it is when I first started blogging, I posted maybe once every 12 days. In March 2006, I produced 2.3 posts per day.
Now, if I could somehow distill / harness that productivity increase and market it to the world, I'd be a rich rich jobless bum, LOL!

In the meantime, I'm easing off on the blogging just a wee bit this week; will instead be concentrating on:
  • getting stuff done for that magazine article i'm procrastinating on
  • research stuff for my Lost Blogs participation PLUS draft most of the entries well before the start of the competition
cheers!

about two months later...

... hi again. This return to blogging is really not working out, is it? Actually, I am writing, three pages of mind vomit and affirmations ...
